Description
The ordeal by fire was one of the divine judgments of the Middle Ages, through which the guilt or innocence of an accused was determined. The accused had to walk barefoot over six or twelve red-hot ploughshares. If the accused remained unharmed, the injury healed within a short time (usually three days) or his injury did not fester, his innocence was considered proven, otherwise he was punished.
