(Original Caption) Berkeley, Calif: Dick Fosbury, an upside down jumper from Oregon State, gets his tail over the bar at 7 ft. 3-1/4 inches, 1/2 inch less than the American Record, but his heel knocked the bar down. The attempt was made after he set a meet record of 7-2 1/4 to win the high jump title in the finals of the NCAA Track and Field Championships at the University of California's Edwards Stadium. His winning leap wiped out the old mark of 7-2 set by Boston University's John Thomas in 1961.
