Description
Devil's Door-way, Devil's Lake, Wisconsin', 1874. Rock formation in Wisconsin, USA. '...the Devil's Lake, a sheet of water as pretty as its name is repellent...in the autumn, the contrast of its still, emerald-green waters with the rich colors of the foliage, and the weird forms of its gray rocks, is inexpressibly lovely...from the Devil's Door-way we obtain an excellent view of a portion of the lake, and the serene vale of Kirkwood, with its orchards, and the vineyards...Beyond these are wide reaches of hill and forest, thick with a dusky growth of spruce, pine, birch, oak, and aspen, extending to the water's edge, and abounding with deer and other game'. From "Picturesque America; or, The Land We Live In, A Delineation by Pen and Pencil of the Mountains, Rivers, Lakes...with Illustrations on Steel and Wood by Eminent American . Artists" Vol. II, edited by William Cullen Bryant. [D. Appleton and Company, New York, 1874]. Artist Alfred Waud. (Photo by The Print Collector/Heritage Images via Getty Images)
