Description
(Original Caption) The Devil Dancers of India: The grotesque devil dancers in India take the place of physicians in many of the island villages. When a person takes sick the Devil Dancers are hired to find out the nature of the sickness. With bodies fantastically, and in many cases hideously daubed with paint, they start to dance in a meaningless whirl until one of their number falls to the earth from exhaustion. The fallen dancer in a sort of dream tells the others what the sick person is suffering from. A pilgrimage is then made to the Village Temple and a sacrifice made to the God of Health, which is then beseeched to take away the sickness.
