Description
NEWPORT, RI - JULY 1966: Delta blues legends guitarist, musician, and singer songwriter Skip James (Nehemiah Curtis "Skip" James - June 9, 1902 - October 3, 1969), left, and Delta blues guitarist and singer songwriter Bukka White (Booker T. Washington "Bukka" White - November 12, 1906 - February 26, 1977), right, pose for a portrait, in July, 1966, while conversing with a female companion between them backstage at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. Both legendary blues musicians were making much-heralded appearances at the folk festival after being rediscovered by blues enthusiasts and song collectors seeking out the blues originators of the 1930s and 1940s. Both musicians had given up their recording and performing careers in the Delta regions of Alabama and Mississippi just before the Second World War and joined the Great Migration of African Americans from the Deep South for points north for careers in labor and manufacturing that afforded the housing and security.
