Description
(Original Caption) A huge crowd on Pier 86 watch the super Liner SS United States pull out of her berth in New York, for her maiden voyage to Europe. A holiday mood prevailed as the largest and fastest ship ever built in the U.S. moved down the North River, into New York Harbor and out to sea. The 990 foot vessel was built at a cost of $73,000,000 and was expected to break the Transatlantic speed record held by Britain's Queen Mary.
