(Original Caption) 1977-Toronto, Canada- Marshall McLuhan, noted writer, educator and pioner communications therorist, who coined the phrase, "The medium is the message", died 12/31 in his sleep after a long illness. He was 69, nine Universities in North America Awarded him honorary degrees in recognition of his accomplishments. McLuhan is seen in this 1977 file photo.
