Description
(Original Caption) Outdoor school at New Rochelle, N.Y., where children receive their schooling on the broad veranda of an old mansion. The school is held from 9:30 in the morning to a half hour past noon, with an intermission about 10:30 - soup, hot milk and chocolate is served. The children wear "parkas," a sort of polar exploration garment, made of drill cloth. In addition to this they wear bags of woolen material which are drawn on over the feet and fastened around the waist, while sitting at their desks. The school is conducted under the supervision of the Board of Health and has proved to be successful, the children progressing rapidly with their studies and gaining weight every month.
