The siege of the Castel San Angelo in Rome by the forces of Emperor Charles V of Spain, 1527. In the struggle between Charles and Francis I of France for control of Italy, Pope Clement VII sided with Francis. Charles responded with an attack and sacking of Rome and the Vatican (left).
