Description
(Original Caption) 10/24/1946-White Sands, NM- Amid a roar and a spurt of flame, a captured V-2 rocket, with a flying laboratory for a warhead, begins its 65-mile flight above the earth, during the experiment at the Army Ordnance Proving Grounds. The test ran off with super-precision, and the V-2 became the ninth to be fired successfully in 13 attempts. The rocket burst at the height of its climb and landed in three pieces twenty miles up range in the New Mexico desert.
