Bostonians reading the Stamp Act, 1765 (c1880). The Stamp Act of 1765 was the first attempt by the British government to impose direct taxation upon the American colonies. The measure was widely unpopular and was one of the catalysts for the American Revolution a decade later. From Smith's American Historical and Literary Curiosities.
