Description
NEW YORK, N.Y. - OCTOBER 1977: Bluegrass singer, songwriter, and musician Hazel Jane Dickens (June 1, 1925 - April 22, 2011) poses for a portrait in New York City, New York. Born into a coal mining family in Mercer County, West Virginia, Hazel Dickens was a pioneer as a female bluegrass bandleader, songwriter and outspoken pro-union, feminist musician/activist. Dickens is featured in Barbara Kopple's Oscar-winning 1976 documentary, 'Harlan County, U.S.A.', about a coal miners' labor strike in 1974 in Harlan County, Kentucky, and John Sayles' 1987 critically-acclaimed film, 'Matewan', about a 1920 coal miner's strike in Matewan, West Virginia.
