Jazz legend Billie Holiday (1915-1959) began singing professionally in the early 1930s, touring with the Count Basie and Artie Shaw orchestras before embarking on a solo career in 1940. Although financially successful, Holiday was personally troubled, and struggled in vain against a heroin addiction that eventually killed her.
