(Original Caption) 10/11/1983-New York, NY: Botanist Barbara McClintock, whose genetic work on corn led to the discovery of "jumping genes" and a greater understanding of cancer, speaks during a press conference 10/10 after learning she won the 1983 Nobel Prize for Medicine. She is the first woman to win the coveted medicine prize on her own.
