Description
Automaton chess player, called "The Turk" by Wolfgang von Kempelen (Hungarian author and inventor, 1734 - 1804). He became known throughout Europe through the construction of this "chess automaton". However, it was actually a human chess player hidden in the device, who controlled the chess moves of a Turkish-clad doll with the help of an elaborate mechanism. Wood engraving, published in 1893.
