(Original Caption) Captain Richard I. Bong, 23, sits on the grocery counter at Poplar, Wisconsin, telling proud neighbors about how he bags Japanese planes in the the South Pacific. This was taken when the lightning pilot was home on leave several months ago. Yesterday he brought his record of Japanese planes downed in actual combat to 27, a new high for planes destroyed in the air.
