Description
(Original Caption) The Face of Experience. Dearborn, Michigan: A skilled engraver, Archibald Smith, is carefully guiding the styllus of a dedrich engraving machine as he fashions the contours of a tiny stamping die at the Ford Motor Company's plant in Waterford, Michigan. This particular machine, capable of inscribing lettering on the head of a pin, is one of the many precision instruments used in building the modern automobile. But without experience of the operator, such a precision tool might be no more precise than an ordinary hammer and chisel. Engraver Smith has what it takes. He's been on the job at Ford for 32 years.
