(Original Caption) Tarawa- US Marines are seen firing from behind a sand bag entrenchment which they threw up as protection on the flat island of Tarawa where the highest point of land was only twelve feet high. The Marine crouching (second from the right) has just thrown a hand granade while the Marine on the right next to him, reloads a machine gun.
