(Original Caption) Detroit, Michigan: AM General Corporation, a subsidiary of American Motors Corporation has been awarded a 1.2 billion contract by the U.S. Army (March 22th), to build a low-slung, diesel-powered 1 1/4 ton tactical vehicle called the Hummer. The new all-terrain vehicle, short for high-mobility, multi-purpose wheeled vehicle, will be assembled near South Bend, Indiana. The contract is estimated to create 800 jobs in the first year and up to 1,400 over its five-year life. The Hummer will be the successor to the Jeep.
