Description
(Original Caption) 11/17/1957-New York, NY- Tennis champion Althea Gibson combines with famed Negro blues composer W.C. Handy in a playful duet before the 84-year-old composer's birthday banquet, which was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria. The occasion marked the singing debut of the 27-year-old Harlem-born amateur tennis champion, and touched off a year-long series of tributes planned for the "Father of the Blues," who is blind and confined to a wheelchair.
