Alexander Adam, L.L.D.', (mid 19th century). Portrait of Alexander Adam (1741-1809), Scottish teacher and writer on Roman antiquities. Aged seventeen, he walked 150 miles from his parents' tenant farm in Morayshire to attend logic classes at Edinburgh university.
