The caption is incorrect on a number of counts. First of all, the trackage we see here is part of the Second Avenue Line, so this would certainly not be Third Avenue. Continuing, this is not Second Avenue either, as south of 23rd St, the line turned off of Second Avenue all together. What we are looking at here is in fact Allen St, just south of Broome St. The building on the extreme left is 81 Allen, followed by 83, and then 85 on the corner of Broome, all on the west side of the block, and all three still standing. In this view we are looking north, so dominating the image is the southbound track. To the right, the entire east side of Allen St would become obliterated when the street was widened in the early 1930's. Another thing, the sign mentioned is in Yiddish, not Hebrew.
