The statue of the Virgin Mary sits atop the El Panecillo hill overlooking the Old Town or Centro Historico of Quito, Ecuador. The historic center of Quito was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in 1978 because it is one of the largest, least-altered and best preserved historic centers in the Americas.
