Artist's Description
Scene from The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, 1927. There lay the body of a man sorely contorted and still twitching. Mr Utterson and Jekyll's butler, having broken down the laboratory door, find that Hyde has not yet returned to being Dr Jekyll. Jekyll had succeeded in separating out the duality in his nature, Hyde representing pure evil and Jekyll good, but eventually the antidote to the Hyde persona ceases to be effective. From The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. (London, 1927). First published 1886. (Photo by Ann Ronan Pictures/Print Collector/Getty Images)
