Artist's Description
Okunoin is the site of the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), the founder of Shingon Buddhism. The temple’s grounds also serve as the final resting place for over 200,000 souls, making it the largest cemetery in Japan. The two-kilometer cobbled path leading to the Okuno-in is lined with ancient cedar trees and tributes to some iconic figures in Japan’s history. Each memorial in the place represents the spirit of the person (heroes of war, modern business, royalty, monks, and feudal lords), keeping their legacy very much alive.
