Konpon Daito pagoda is located in Danjo Garan, the monastic complex built by Kobo Daishi Kukai, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. The construction of the Konpon Daito pagoda took from 816 to 887. Kobo Daishi referred to this pagoda as a representation of the universe, and it is called Konpon (principal) Daito as it was the central training dojo for the Shingon Sect.
