Scene from Adam Bede by George Eliot, c1885. In his tall stalwartness Adam Bede was a Saxon and justified his name. Adam, the village carpenter, in the workshop, his dog Gyp on a pile of shavings under the bench. The novel is set in the late 18th century and the men all wear the typical carpenter's cap and apron.
