Artist's Description

17th July 1954: A man working on a ship's crankshaft in an engineering workshop at Greenock where around ten marine engines are produced annually. The shipyards are the major employers in the area and, while demand is high, the industry supports the local economy. In July 1954 the Clyde shipyards had about 2,000,000 gross tons of shipping under construction and factories were manufacturing enough engines to supply the local trade and export the surplus.
