Description
Cocktail dress, 1953 (front view). Silk satin, wool crepe by Charles James; worn by Mrs Albert H Newman, nee Muriel Kalls. Known as the 'Empress Josephine' or 'Josephine' dress after the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, due to its Empire waist styling, this gown is also sometimes called a 'sweatshirt' dress, referring to the mid-twentieth century knit top.
