Artist's Description

Astoria Park, Hell Gate Bridge, Queens;
Astoria Pool, with its art deco styling, is the largest, capable of accommodating more than 6,600 bathers at a time. Where children cool themselves in the turbulent waters around Hell Gate, a state-of-the-art facility, measuring 330 feet in length. Soon after opening in July 11, 1936 the pool will host the American Olympic Swimming and Diving Trials.
Pool Info: 19th Street and 23rd Drive, Queens, 330’ x 165’, capacity 6, 670 people, Opened July 2, 1936
Framed by the Triborough and Hell Gate Bridges, Astoria Pool is the largest of the eleven WPA pools. WPA administrator Harry Hopkins described it as "the finest in the world." Metropolitan Opera Company soprano Julia Peters sang at the dedication of the pool, underscoring the pool’s epic quality. The Olympic Trials for the United States Swim and Diving Teams in 1936 and 1964 were held at the pool. (Photo By: NY Daily News via Getty Images)
