The Porsche 550A Spyder debuted at the 1956 Mille Miglia (Thousand Miles) held in Brescia, Italy. Although 356s were enjoying success as rally cars, the Porsche factory, with its first-hand knowledge of the Auto Unions and the Cisitalia GP car, was reluctant to consider the 356 as anything more than a sports car. A modified aluminum-bodied Gmund coupe scored a Le Mans-class win in 1951 and sparked interest in the Porsche staff to design an all-new racing machine. The result was the 550 Spyder, which won numerous events in Europe and abroad.
